About the Artist

About the ArtistFor as long as I can remember I have wanted to be an artist. Typically, there was a sketch of some kind on my homework assignments whether it was for an art class or not... from kindergarden through high school (and beyond).

As an undergraduate I studied traditional illustration and traditional painting (oil acrylic and watercolor). My materials ranged from pen and ink to acrylic and oil paints as well as sculpture. My work ranged from an 8"x11" piece of paper to a 5'x8' stretched canvas to any old piece of junk I could find and then paint on.

After I graduated from NIU I decided to teach myself Graphic Design. At this point my canvas became measured in pixels. I bought a lot of books with "For Dummies" and "Classroom In A Book" on the cover. I finally got a job at a large corporation where I worked for nearly seven years.

It was at this point that I decided to go back to school and earn my first master's degree. My new goal was to become a college teacher. I have been an instructor at the community college level for over seven years as an adjunct graphic design and digital imaging teacher. I am also still an active freelance designer and developer in the industry.

The most important thing that I teach my students is that is better to be a Jack of all trades than a master of one. If you can learn to stay adaptable and creative in the age of computers, then that will be your greatest asset.
